one more useless fact …

1 Dec

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s concern over why hamburgers are called hamburgers ~ today I was faced with yet another life changing conundrum.

While visiting a local theatre to book an event for next year, I was given a guided tour. As we wandered into ‘the green room’ I was surprised to see magnificent purple and orange glass panelling, timber furniture, cream walls and comfortable lounges…. but NOTHING  green.

green roomI asked the obvious question  …..why is it called a green room ?

You guess it …the theatre director had no real answer. She said here are many theories but none agreed by the majority of the theatre word. So … after sharing my new-found knowledge on the history of hamburgers with her, we agreed I should ‘google it’.

To my delight I discovered that this very question has been tackle by a fellow blogger…one who is clearly far more connected to the ‘world of the stage’ than I ….so I’m happy to share Ken’s observations for you, rather than re-write the re-write. (Thanks Ken)

I’m pleased to see that while Uni is done for the year …there is still plenty of opportunity to expand my brain (and yours) by solving the big issues  …I wonder what we can tackle next ?

smarter than the average 5oSomething…

It’s that time of year again here in parts of Australia, when we welcome back our longer days, our evening BBQs… and the kids that grumble about going to bed while it’s still daylight (well maybe we don’t actually welcome the whingey little people bit ….but they soon acclimatise and enjoy it too).

Yep, I’m talking about daylight saving….and I love it !!

Daylight-Savings-TimeI could go on and on about why I love it … but my point is really about the confusion of changing the clock, and how it plays games with even the sharpest mind.

There is always the inevitable debate ‘do I put it forward and hour?? ….or back by an hour? ‘….. ‘am I gaining an hour of beauty sleep ? …or being ripped off by an hour?’ Not to mention …‘if I have an airline ticket, purchased BEFORE the time change …what time do I go to the airport?’

So to wake in the morning and find the bedside clock-radio, microwave and kitchen clock telling me one time, while my ‘smart phone’ had already moved on and is telling me something different, really does my head in.

I mean, HOW does the phone know?

Seriously…… I know it’s all about satellites and co-ordinates and all that scientific stuff, but honestly it does my head in to think that every phone & computer just automatically knows what to do based on it’s address at the time.

What happens if you live on the Queensland~NSW border, where one street can make a difference to what time of day it is?….So, OK smart phone… are you smart enough to cope with THAT. ? ..and what happens when you pop to the local shop that just happens to be inter-state???

Some things are just too hard for my ‘50Something’ brain to understand… perhaps I just need to accept that it’s one of life’s many mysteries, and stop trying.

How does it work ? I mean seriously when you stop to think about it this whole internet thing, is bloody amazing…. it just seeped into our worlds, bringing with it a whole new language and putting an infinite amount of useful (and useless) information at our fingertips…. But love it or hate it, you have to admit it’s pretty incredible …even if completely bizarre.

Now I’m not trying to get all technical here, and really it’s a rhetorical question, because I’m not expecting an explanation at all…. BUT today It struck me that I have NO understanding of how it works. I mean who puts all the data somewhere in the first place, so that it can be found within seconds of click on the google icon? videos-internet

Today as we were cruising along the freeway on the sunny NSW coast, 20something daughter took a happy snap and ‘snap chatted’ it to her 20something  brother on the other side of the globe. Now the fact that he replied in seconds (despite it being 1am in Montreal at the time) was pretty awesome in itself, but when I actually thought about it my brain hurt.

I realised that I have NO idea how a photo can be broken down into data …sent around the world… received and reconstituted into an image ….with NO cables, wires or connections….within seconds!

And …what stops the all the signals getting scrambled, and mutating on the way ??  There are an awful lot of decoded photos flying around out there waiting to hit their destination and be instantly  recognisable.

I know this is just one the many mysteries of the modern age …but you’ve got to admit, it is more than a little fascinating, and I bet I’m not the only one ‘wondering’…..
