lucky 300…

300

Woo Hoo ~Today is the 300th day of the year !!

…. “how on earth does she know that”? I hear you ask …or more likely …“so what”?

Well I know, because this is the 300th blog post this year… 300 peeks through the window and into the nonsense that goes on my head.

Back in the beginning… (January 1st to be exact) I made a commitment to write something…, anything, every day for a year. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and I guess on reflection it was… But while it does force you to stop and think about one random aspect of life every day ….it’s certainly not for the faint hearted.

  • I’ve learned lots about myself … and lots about what I need to learn about (… mmm like the truth about chickens and dolphins)
  • I’ve discovered an unusual number of my observations take place in toilets (like… where DO put your handbag?).
  • I’ve figured that there are themes in the things that catch my attention (eyebrows, bad spelling…and birds ..)
  • I’ve realised that there are an awful lot of coincidences in this life (what are the chances…?)
  • I’ve embraced the fact that I’m 50 something … but not dead yet !!
  • and I’ve understood that it doesn’t matter whether you know if anyone is reading … but how lovely it is when you get some random feedback… or bump into someone and the next thing they make a comment about something they enjoyed (or hated) …and I think “well there you go someone IS out there after all”.

So…. as I continue to tap away for another 65days, I I hate to say it … but that means it’s 59 days until Christmas !!!

After 212 days in my 365 day blog challenge, I actually took a minute to read something about ‘how to write blog’

…mmm hindsight is such a wonderful teacher…

How often do you stop to look at your back view before walking out of the house?

It occurred to me this morning, that I spend time putting myself together for the day…. You know, getting the clothes and accessories just right, blow drying hair and then painting my face with ‘layer upon layer’ of moisturiser, sun protection, foundation and blush….BUT I never ever look at what people see from behind.

Lets face it 50% of the time we are viewed from our rear …so surely it deserves a little attention.

It’s worth checking to see if your skirt is caught in your knickers… you have unsightly undie lines with fat oozing around them…., or if your butt cheeks are eating your trousers… All very unattractive sights for the people travelling at the rear (and no matter how good the ‘front end’ looks …. an ugly backside will be a complete let down for your look).

It took 50 something years for me to appreciate the value of taking a peek back there…but hopefully it will help you prevent any embarrassing slip ups.

a spotlight on the spud…

14 Jul

I feel really lucky to live in a small semi-rural village , and work just 30mins away in the hustle and bustle of a city on the outskirts of Sydney.

Every day I drive 25 of those minutes along the river… through small farms and horse studs . It’s the perfect way to wind up or wind down from work (and it gives me plenty of ‘wondering’ time).

potatosDuring these winter months it’s cold and dark as I weave my way home along the lowlands… past the small farms and market gardens. So you can imagine my surprise when I came across spotlights and headlights in the middle of a paddock this evening. The field was lit up like a showground, yet I struggled to see what was going on at the centre of all the action… until I got a little closer and discovered a massive potato harvesting operation in full swing.

Who would have imagined ? 7pm in the middle of winter and there they were all hands on deck to get the spuds out of the ground. I couldn’t decide whether it was admirable or mad… but I guess when your spuds are done they’re done, and the market wont wait.

Just one more damn good reason that I’m not a farmer… (but thank goodness some people are… otherwise where would our chips come from?)

driving blind…

10 Jul

How is it that you can drive the same route every day… yet not actually see what’s going on?

As any regular followers will know, I often comment on the quirky, nonsensical and useless things that catch my attention while driving to or from work… You know, the ‘odd’ numberplate, bad spelling on a street or shop sign, crazy pedestrian behaviour…. anything really.

So you can imagine my own surprise when today I noticed a brand new house en route …  I have never seen it before, yet it’s clearly been under house buildingconstruction for many weeks if not months.

How does that happen?

Now I’m not talking about a new project home in a housing estate …. I’m talking about semi-rural living where generously proportioned homes take prime position on small or medium sized acreage. I know I’m driving to the conditions and attentive on the road; but it seems that somehow the busy and often odd thoughts going on in my brain must block out the more ‘routine’  sights along the way.

I can tell you about the cat laying in the window of a house I passed …. yet I can’t see a house …go figure!

winning the half marathon

1 Jul

halfwayI can’t believe I’m half way !!!

On the first of January I made a rash and somewhat grand statement that I would  share some whimsical thought, reflection or just plain nonsense every day for a year. It seemed easy enough at the time…after all …I love words and they (usually) fall out of my brain easily… but I hadn’t accounted for the challenges that life throws up along the way.

That said, I’ve made it this far having missed only 2 days.

One day that didn’t exist for us as we crossed the International Dateline on our return from New York… and the other was just last Saturday, when (as many of you know) I was busy  preparing, hosting, celebrating and then recovering from our huge ‘fur and flanno’ farewell event.CAM00254

I wont pretend that it’s been scintillating, intellectually stimulating, particularly humorous….or necessarily interesting reading…. BUT hey I never promised that! All I said was that it would be a random collection of observations…a window to my world…. and it would definitely NOT be political, whining or negative.

So with a deep breath I now jump into part 2 of 2014…I’m still ‘50something…..and not dead yet’

time to celebrate …

100

Today marks a milestone … the 100th post in my 365day blog challenge…(and I thought I would be lucky to make the first month).

So…what have I learned in the process ???

  • not to overthink it, trying too hard will definitely lead to brain block.
  • if I  think it …probably others will too (even though they may not yet realise).
  • not to take myself too seriously,  there are plenty of people out there searching for the meaning of life and the universe.
  • that it doesn’t really matter if no-one reads it… (although it’s great to know when they do) … its really just about getting those words out of my head (to make room for more)
  • that I really DO love windows

Here’s to the next 265 days…. thanks for coming on the ride.
