what do eyebrows… toilets… people… and fashion have in common ?

30 Dec

I have to say …not much !!! except that they have each seemed to feature in my life on a regular basis over this past year.

So following a special request, and before ‘the-year-of-the-blog’ draws to a close, I’m happy to say that this piece of observational trivia touches on all of the above.

BUT… first I must  again comment that I’ve lost a day …24hours of my life vanished. Never to be seen again. So if you notice that we skipped from 28th Dec to 30th Dec …blame the International Dateline (and the fact that Australia is so far away from the rest of the world).

Now, as I have mentioned earlier…plane travel is a great time for people watching.  I mean what else are you going to do while strapped in that seat? (other than eat ‘less-than-great-food’, sleep… and watch movies). The people surrounding you can be a great source of amusement and entertainment …or a complete pain in the bum….But whichever way they go, they provides great fodder for the astute observer. Take for example or my neighbour who, despite establishing very early in the journey that I had no voice, so conversation was impossible ….insisted on asking me endless questions (prefaced with …‘Oh I know it’s hard for you to answer…BUT … what can you tell me about ….insert X,Y,Z …..for the next 15 hours)
P1010620 (2)Or, consider the super-sized gent squeezed between the armrests and looking extraordinarily uncomfortable (not to mention his next door neighbour) …or the four legged pooch who lays still @ his owners feet all the way from New York to LA ( I wonder what party drugs HE was on?)….the gorgeous young woman who ‘slipped into something more comfortable’ and travelled most of 15 hour leg of the journey in her skimpy PJ’s …the list is endless and the entertainment value priceless.

Then there is the morning ‘freshen-up’ ….Daylight arrives, people rouse from their drug induced slumber and begin to queue for the loo. There they are, all waiting to brush the fungus from their gaping mouths and prepare for ‘de-planing’ (yep that’s a word according to our flight steward), so the time taken in the super cosy cubicle is longer than any other visit throughout the flight… but that’s OK because we all want to look our best when we emerge from the airport, back on home soil… don’t we?

However, when my turn comes…to my shock and horror, I enter this slightly-warmer-than-is-comfortable space, to discover the residue of many travellers. Hand towels and loo paper strewn, water splashed all over the cupboard top and worst of all, a sink full of toothpaste spittle. Eeek !! True to my style, I can’t bear to leave it how I find it (after all…god forbid… the next person in the queue  might think I’M responsible …) …so I set about the ‘housework’ so that I can leave with my head held high.

That job done, it’s time to clean myself up. One look in the mirror tells me that 27hrs of travel was not the best for putting ‘the best face forward’ so a full re-do was desperately needed. BUT alas, when I get to the ….(you guessed it….) eyebrows, I had no colouring-in pencil or brush for a touch up. Arrrgggh !!!eyebrows

Always one to improvise, I reached for my mascara,  figuring that a hint of that would do the job …That was, UNTIL… we hit some turbulence  and my ‘hint’ became a solid swipe, and the colour turned out to blue-black rather than brown !!! …ooops, I suddenly look like ‘a horror movie right there on the TV’.

So, after a few minutes of scrubbing, I emerged  sporting my black eyes (not QUITE what I had in mind to be ready to greet the world)  … BUT… the housework was done ….and appearances where kept up …in part at least!!

raise you an eyebrow …

26 Oct

Sunday = maintenance day …and today it was all about eyebrows.

Those of you regular readers, will know that I have a fascination with eyebrows…My follicularly challenged  brow bones cause me to be somewhat obsessed with these useless bit of face furniture.  Lets just say, the words feeble, fine….and fair …are not understating my dilemma.

Feeling that a trip to the beautician was a bit over the top to tint my sparse offerings….I opted to do it myself. … but without warning ‘Mr 50Something’ not to come into the bathroom. All I can say is he thought Halloween had arrived a few days early when he walked in to discover ….. this …

After reassuring him that this was not a new fashion statement but a means to an end … he was fine. So after 10 minutes of waiting for the magic to happen I had the ‘big reveal’… only to find they are still awfully scrawny, but at least a few shades darker.

In my next life I want real eyebrows …..please!

face painting for the 50Something…

22 Oct

So… there I was preparing to head out for the day with Mr 50Something, when I sense he is becoming a  little toe-y. I heard the pacing and the car keys rattling and knew instantly  that I was getting the ‘hurry-up’, so rather than finish the job properly, I figured I add the final touches in the car.

I emerge from the bathroom ready to go and he looked at me quizzically…

‘ummm … you look good …BUT …you haven’t finished ‘colouring in!’colour in

I replied that I had my paint box and tools and that I would complete the work of art en-route…

He was then completely amused as he watched the portrait take shape layer upon layer on the blank canvas. A hint of colour here and a touch of gloss there, extra fibres for eyelashes, tinted gel for those (ever important) eyebrows, a defining edge for the lips and finally a quick powder dusting to set the lot.

Done … from ‘early morning bedroom’ face to ‘happy to be seen in public’ face in only 2kms….. and with endless commentary from the man who first questioned what was missing and then proceeded to ask ‘why do you bother with all this’ ?…. sigh…. Because I’m 50Something but not dead yet !!!

beauty in a bottle..or tube..or jar….

20 Jul

Back in the bathroom and reflecting on the tough world of womanhood.

There are products everywhere to…clean, moisturise, tint, tighten, straighten, add body, strip colour, whiten, hold and shine, deodorise and sanitise… and they just keep coming even when you don’t buy them. Sample products that all look like a great offer (everyone likes something for nothing …right?) …and a chance to try something new …(but rarely do).beauty-sweeps

On Wednesday I left the hairdresser with yet another tube of cream styling stuff … my reward for having visited 10 times….. I came home and added it to the collection, wondering why I couldn’t have just had a discount instead.

Now the challenge is to figure what tube does what each morning as I prepare to face the world…. Being ’50Something’   means having the glasses handy so that I can actually read the labels.

The last thing we want is to moisturise with a styling cream that adds body and bounce…..to my face!

check out the backside…

How often do you stop to look at your back view before walking out of the house?

It occurred to me this morning, that I spend time putting myself together for the day…. You know, getting the clothes and accessories just right, blow drying hair and then painting my face with ‘layer upon layer’ of moisturiser, sun protection, foundation and blush….BUT I never ever look at what people see from behind.

Lets face it 50% of the time we are viewed from our rear …so surely it deserves a little attention.

It’s worth checking to see if your skirt is caught in your knickers… you have unsightly undie lines with fat oozing around them…., or if your butt cheeks are eating your trousers… All very unattractive sights for the people travelling at the rear (and no matter how good the ‘front end’ looks …. an ugly backside will be a complete let down for your look).

It took 50 something years for me to appreciate the value of taking a peek back there…but hopefully it will help you prevent any embarrassing slip ups.
