summing things up…

24 Apr

Picture this… I am in a store waiting to purchase 2 new autumn tops  (that’s not important ~ just wanted to share my bargain), all around the store are signs saying 40% off EVERYTHING, but also on the counter is a small display offering 10% discount to students.

student discountA young man approaches the counter ahead of me and asks the shop assistant how he goes about getting the student discount.

She smiles and replies that there is 40% off EVERYTHING and therefore the student discount does not apply.

Puzzled he asks again … ‘but what do I need to do to  get the 10%?’40 percent

Again she responds calmly and says that all he needs to do is show his student card, HOWEVER today it does not apply because there is 40% of EVERYTHING.

He insisted that he would like to have the student discount because he is a Uni student …and she said … ‘OK that’s fine, just double checking that you would rather have the 10% discount than the 40% storewide discount’?

He stood there, mouth wide and thinking, then after some time replied …’well maybe the 40% would be a better deal… eh’?

Let’s just hope he is not studying mathematics.

wayfinding gone feral…

22 Apr

Today I met a friend for coffee in an unfamiliar… yet ‘oh so familiar’ shopping mall in Sydney. I say unfamiliar because it is not one I frequent normally… yet familiar because once inside, that are all so ‘same same’.

That is … except for the carpark.carpark

Oh my goodness I felt like I was driving in a foreign country as I tried to negotiate the unfamiliar space, complete with construction work…barriers…one way signs and temporary redirection signs. The markings on the ground were confusing to say the least with arrows having been re-routed… and at one stage I found myself going up the down ramp !!!

wrong wayNow I don’t know a great deal about traffic flow …BUT I was part of a “way-finding strategy working party” (yes I work for a Gov’t Dept)  for a new Health facility …and I know that the signage in this particular car park would have failed miserably on any way-finding measurement scale.

Shame on you Macquarie Centre …lets hope the new look centre is worth all the bingles, road rage, lost cars and frayed nerves.

Here endeth the rant 😉

cats… pigs… kangaroos…and black ice

20 Apr

After another day of road tripping,  it’s hard to single out one particular highlight or blogworthy moment… So many bizarre and interesting sights.P1130621

Like yesterday, the changes in landscape have to be seen to be believed…  we left the lush green grazing land of the Murray Valley and headed into the High Country, crossing the rugged great dividing range before emerging back into the wide open spaces that looked like a moon scape covered in huge P1130647round granite boulders …it was as if there had been a nuclear attack and we had missed the news (which would have been very possible given the remote location and lack of phone or internet reception).

Throughout the 500 plus kilometres, I was struck by the seemingly unnecessary bends in the road…I mean had we driven in a straight line I reckon it would have been a 300km trip.. Now I’m not silly … (noP1130665 comment please) I DO realise that if there is a mountain or a lake there needs to be consideration of the best way over or around it…. BUT there were so many wide open spaces where we twisted and turned for no obvious reason…and I began to wonder if the road gangs responsible got bored and decided to get a bit creative with their graders.

I know I am not a geologist or a road engineer, but seriously did it need to be that complicated?

At one point we were winding through one of the more scrubby landscapes and came across…

sign #1 care black ice on road...then

sign #2 pigs on road…then finally

sign #3 cats crossing…and bugga me a cat ran across the road as if on cue…all this as we negotiated the twists and turns that could easily have been a a straight road…and NO mention of the kangaroos that appeared from behind the bushes when we least expected them.

If anyone reading this blog has a clue …I would appreciate an explanation… because it sure doesn’t make any sense from where I sit.

birds of a feather ….

19 Apr

Another day of  road tripping across the great Aussie countryside and I was struck by so many things.

  • The fact that the landscape seems to change so dramatically every few hundred kilometres,
  • That the difference between NSW and Vic is minimal….yet he difference between NSW and QLD is vast.
  • That we have SOOO much spare space ( yet  why are we worried about refugees?… but this is not  political forum ..so forget I said that)
  • That every square kilometre is beautiful.
  • That we really ARE the LUCKY country despite our State or National politics….

BUT on a serious note … I have been wondering about birds. With the wide open spaces and huge skies, you can’t help but notice the small things. One of which was the formation… and flight of flocks of birds.birds in formation 2

Now I am not an ornithologist, so I have no idea what kind they are….. but on our drive from Swan Hill to Beechwood today, we were entertained by many flocks of birds that looked like they were in training for the synchronised swimming events at the next Olympics.

At first it was like seeing sign-writing in action,  soon we realised that it was in fact birds…. and I couldn’t help but wonder WHY???

Who is the leader? how does he/she decide the formation? What happens when they get tired …and WHAT IS THE POINT???

As entertaining as this whole thing was…. I really want to understand the purpose….and what happens when one or more don’t want to play ?? where do THEY go??

I wonder …..?

in abundance…

18 Apr

So many kilometres…so many observations.

Its been a day of huge skies and open space with a few quirky and notable localities…I wont call them towns …because I always imagine that towns are alive and house people… not so in many of the addresses we passed.Galore

The most amusing was “Galore”.. a teeny location with a sign to identify that we were in fact there …one house…and a community hall. It was amusing from the point of view that when  I googled a definition of the word we found:

aplenty, in abundance, in profusion, in great quantity, in large numbers, by the dozen

Ironic ??mmm I think someone goofed 😉

counting sheep…

17 Apr

We had a very pleasant day soaking up the country air and taking in the sights of the Riverina … but as usual I was prompted to wonder about the meaning of life. The life of a sheep that is …

Driving along, the vast paddocks spread for miles on both sides of the long straight road…and you can’t help but notice the sheepclusters of strangely proportioned creatures whose lives seem somewhat  meaningless as they wander aimlessly.

I watched as there seemed to be no real pattern to their movements…and despite the saying that we follow like a bunch of sheep.. THEY didn’t seem to be following anyone.  There they were in small groups (family groupings?? I wondered) in the middle of no-where. What a strange existence.

I wonder what they think ?…. I mean..DO they think at all ? (I’m sure they must)  I wonder what they wonder while they just hang around waiting to be shorn or turned into a BBQ.

time to celebrate …

10 Apr

100

Today marks a milestone … the 100th post in my 365day blog challenge…(and I thought I would be lucky to make the first month).

So…what have I learned in the process ???

  • not to overthink it, trying too hard will definitely lead to brain block.
  • if I  think it …probably others will too (even though they may not yet realise).
  • not to take myself too seriously,  there are plenty of people out there searching for the meaning of life and the universe.
  • that it doesn’t really matter if no-one reads it… (although it’s great to know when they do) … its really just about getting those words out of my head (to make room for more)
  • that I really DO love windows

Here’s to the next 265 days…. thanks for coming on the ride.

it is my duty, and I will do it with honour…

5 Apr

You may remember me mocking the  airline security issue a couple of days back…with the self reporting  ‘tick-a-box’ approach to ‘I’m a terrorist’ ….or  ‘I’m not a terrorist’.

Well our airport experience actually proved two things about the move to online, self serve check-in, and security screening.

1/ people lie (now that’s a surprise)

2/ the security guys are annoyingly slow …. but good at their job.

We arrived with a comfortable buffer of time before our flight and a plan to fill that time relaxing with a coffee, however, that was clearly not going to happen. As we decanted our metal bits, liquids and laptop  into the plastic trays,  and threw our carry on onto the conveyer belt, the security guy is like a broken record repeating his mantra about removing all aerosol cans for inspection. Yeah yeah we get it ….

‘Mr 50Something’ got pulled aside for an extra swipe of the metal detector after setting off the walk through screening with his brand new titanium knees (a brief explanation and he was free to go)… then as I walk through I notice the conveyor belt has stopped and MY suitcase hauled aside for a closer inspection.  Everything was being done systematically and in frustratingly a thorough manner…so I’m left standing while they complete the inspection of the previous luggage (by now I’m thinking  ‘bugga I’m thinking there goes my coffee’).screening

Feeling very smug about the contents of my bag, and knowing they would find no contraband  I was  amused by the fuss (at first)… but then started to get a little irritated as the clocked ticked and I could see we were no longer early.

The search of the other passenger’s bag was taking forever. He was very defensive and ‘daring’ the inspector to find anything illegal, as the contents of his backpack were systematically spread across the counter, however, the inspector calmly and forcefully insisted that there was a knife secreted in there somewhere.

THEN  on the third run through the contents…there is was…a knife alright! With a 25cm long blade, tucked away inside a cardboard sleeve and wrapped in a t shirt.  The passenger just shrugged and said ‘OK you win’…as if to say it was worth a try.

So by now our boarding call is happening,  and I’m very politely suggesting that they just ‘have a quick look and let me go because there is nothing irregular in my bag’… the response (read with Indian accent) was ‘Madam it is my duty, and I will do it with honour , I will be as fast as I am able but I must be thorough’. To which I’m thinking yes that’s great but I’m going to miss my plane. Then he pulls out a can of hairspray ….an AEROSOL can..oops ….now look who’s  embarrassed!

Oh dear, that’s what happens when you pack in an absent minded rush.  I completely forgot about the hairspray (that I probably won’t even use)

I wonder if that was the same excuse the ‘knife man’ used ??  Somehow I think his packing was a little more deliberate.

Yes we made the plane …JUST !!!

flying high ….

2 Apr

Tonight’s observation relates to how we live almost every aspect of our lives online … not saying that’s a good or a bad thing… No doubt there are many many advantages to steam-lining systems and going paperless and person-less, BUT I must admit to having a chuckle this afternoon as I did my online check-in for flights tomorrow, and pondered where we have ‘progressed’ to these days.security

I got through the first few steps …click, next page click… ready to print and up pops the  security check. Are you planning to carry any explosives on-board?      I laughed out loud… thinking…

“mmm well actually I thought I might, but perhaps I should consider whether I really need them this trip” – then checked “NO”

Then I remembered my of my recent experience doing our ESTA application to go to USA … and the questions:

Are you a ‘drug abuser’ or addict?… Do you have a mental health disorder? Do you have a communicable disease such as Chancroid, Gonorrhea, Leprosy, Syphilis, or Tuberculosis? …’mmm now let me think about this” !

These questions seem completely bizarre to be  written in black n white with no human context…no sensitive enquiry about health conditions and no sense of needing to tell the truth.

I can’t seriously imagine ANYONE ticking “yes I am mentally ill, have syphilis and currently smoke crack” … I mean REALLY?… can you?

more cozy cubicles…

28 Mar

Another cubicle complaint today …. I’m sorry to repeat myself BUT seriously what is going on ???

I know that I am not in the ‘petite’ category …. but nor am I ‘obese’and yet today I struggled to get into a toilet cubicle and manoeuvre my way around to ‘take a seat ‘.

Loo

Unlike the detailed explanation of my toilet experience @ Central Station  a few months back , THIS time I was in a  Public Hospital loo. …Surely it’s not TOO much to expect them to cater for the ‘average dimensioned’ woman’s needs.

It seems clear that the ruthless Health Cuts, of late have made their way  to the humble toilet cubicle…. we now have the  ‘bean -counters’ asking “how small can we sub-dived the bathroom…to get he most seats in place and away with it” ???

There I was sandwiched between the industrial sized toilet-roll holder on one side and the sani-bin on the other, with no elbow room at all…. I can only imagine the difficulty if ‘one of the sisterhood’ turned up with a baby in tow …. OR was eldery or disabled’ … It just doesn’t bear thinking about really…
