what ARE we thinking ???

13 Apr

Whoever said that Uni is a good idea for a “50something” ??? I mean really, who am I kidding ??

I love the idea of learning, and I love the idea of being a student…. sitting here in a hotel room with a glass of wine, cold chicken and textbooks …. but even more than that I love the idea of writing (and if that means essays …. then so be it) … BUT why go to these lengths I ask myself, as I balance 3 blogs and 3 FB pages ….isn’t that enough ‘writing’ for one person ?

At the end of the journey (IF I work in the field)  I will command approximately half of what I get paid now …so there is no economic sense whatsoever….BUT the satisfaction of finishing it can’t be measured in dollars (I keep telling  myself).

Onward and upward the end is (almost) in sight.end in sight

Meanwhile let me share a little trivia that caught my eye today ….

No doubt, many of you subscribe (or have been subscribed to)  numerous online shopping list serves, you know the ones … cudo, living social, catch of the day etc etc etc … well it never ceases to amaze me the array of “BARGAINS” on offer that we never knew we needed.

Mostly I just hit that good old delete button … but the title  line of this one made me laugh…. what WERE they thinking ?? It read :

 I mean ….SERIOUSLY ???

pardon me if I repeat myself

12 Apr

…and I could (repeat myself that is) …with yet another public toilet adventure that happened today …. BUT I wont.

What I do want to talk about is our crazy habit of giving towns double (repeat word names) … Here I am tonight in Wagga Wagga.. yet all Aussies that I know, call it Wagga, and somehow when I hear the whole title I think people are trying to be funny, or mock the place..

When I left the airport  and was 5 mins down the road and came across the town (well call it a town  at a stretch …)gumly gumlyI was prompted to investigate. So… having settled into my hotel room, I resisted the urge to prepare myself for day 1 of Uni tomorrow and instead I consulted Mr Google about this silly name thing…. I was astonished to find that there are over 60 Australian locations whose names are duplicate words.

Not surprisingly many of them are Aboriginal names and apparently the reduplication is an indication of emphasis (if Wagga means crow then Wagga Wagga means MANY crows.. ) BUT what I don’t get is why we pick and choose which ones to abbreviate to one word … I mean why do we all call Wagga Wagga Wagga … but we don’t call Woy Woy, Woy??.

So many questions and so few answers …

There is so much to say today and I don’t know where to start…

Do I tell you about getting locked in the carpark at work late last night when my car  was on the outside..AND it was pouring rain and dark… AND I needed to phone the security company to come and let me out (those of you that know me will see the humour in that).  I made the call and the guy sounds irritated and I realise that he thinks it’s a hoax call …I humour him and tell him, “no this is not my special phone voice just for you … it’s the one I live with and I am about to expire trying to have this conversation with you” . He sent a car around to let me out of jail … but not before I was wet cold and hungry.

So then the sun came up and it was the day that my 2 amazing vocal buddies and I have been waiting for … our very own World Voice Day Concert ~ “Voices in the Valley” !!  It was a fantastic accomplishment and an emotional ride as we watched the 10 performances demonstrate one by one WHY voice matters … and what an exquisite instrument it  can be.

Warm and fuzzy feeling cartoon

I’m not going to rave on about it… BUT I AM going to bed tonight with a warm and fuzzy inner glow….feeling loved and supported by family, friends and workmates who know how important it is for me to be involved in celebrating what it is to HAVE a voice… after almost 8 years without one.

You all know who you are  … love you long time.

time to celebrate …

100

Today marks a milestone … the 100th post in my 365day blog challenge…(and I thought I would be lucky to make the first month).

So…what have I learned in the process ???

  • not to overthink it, trying too hard will definitely lead to brain block.
  • if I  think it …probably others will too (even though they may not yet realise).
  • not to take myself too seriously,  there are plenty of people out there searching for the meaning of life and the universe.
  • that it doesn’t really matter if no-one reads it… (although it’s great to know when they do) … its really just about getting those words out of my head (to make room for more)
  • that I really DO love windows

Here’s to the next 265 days…. thanks for coming on the ride.

closing the shutters…

9 Apr

First of all I THINK my keyboard has restored itself back to normal (god I hate these computer glitches that come and go…leaving you thinking that you’re mad) … Anyway it makes typing a lot easier than last night’s effort..

Tonight  I’m looking for some advice…I need your opinions. I HATE to think I come across as rude, so I need to check something out.

I was at the hairdresser this evening…it’s a kind of forced relaxation in that you sit (sometimes for hours) with nothing to do other than look at yourself in the mirror, read a magazine or play with your phone. Now given my vocal challenges, it is even more complicated becauseI am unable to chat and make small talk with the hairdresser or clients beside me. The TV in the background, buzz of the clippers and the  roar of the hairdryer are enough to test even the most capable vocal cords. hairsalon

So… rather than be drawn into an impossible conversation…I closed my eyes. That’s right,  while the stylist fluffed, flounced trimmed and blew my hair I pretended to be dozing. In fact after a short while I was no longer pretending… I was seriously snoozing.

BUT is this rude ???

At one stage I wondered if she thought I was  praying, and would she feel uncomfortable nudging me to go to the basin for a wash?  Or did she think I was unwell? Or did she think anything at all (perhaps she was secretly pleased because SHE didn’t need to make small talk… I just don’t know.

All I DO know is that I was buggered and it felt good to zone out for a while … just wonder what you all reckon?

the disadvantage of dyslexic fingers

8 Apr

After a crazier than usual few days I’m struggling to stay focussed enough to write anything intelligible …THEN my damn keyboard has a melt down with the curser jumping from one word to another.

dyslexia

I find myself jumbling words… sentences… and whole darn articles….So…with that in my mind …this will be very brief !!!

In fact I might jst not correct the next few li it takes us nes and see where. Its hard to imagine life like this being anywhere close to ‘normal’ (whatver that is .).

so i think we need a window now  instead of new words

and the balls just keep on coming…

(not so) white noise

6 Apr

Over these past years since becoming ‘vocally challenged’, I have become acutely aware of noise …background noise of all kinds. There is just so much of it when you stop and actually ‘tune into it’…. the noise of life, you can’t escape it and I know that I just need to suck it up and live with it….

BUT then there is the annoying, unnecessary, unintelligible sound of public address systems.voice amplifier 2 You know, the announcements at the train station, in the shopping malls or airports…when someone feels they have important news to impart and it’s lost somewhere between the ridiculously loud volume,  their need to speak quickly (god knows why) and the running of one announcement right into the next ….until no-one listens any more and the words are lost in the chaos of the environment. No wonder the world is stressed.

This afternoon trying to return from our few days away, we had boarded the plane, only to be told that there was an ‘issue’ and we needed to disembark until the engineers had it sorted… (clearly a better option than finding out mid-flight). For the next 2 hours we were at the mercy of the PA system,  instructions that could barely be deciphered were barked at us periodically adding to the anxiety of weary travellers who just wanted to get home… changes of time, changes of departure gate, missing passengers … it just went on and on and on.

All’s well that ends well … but surely with a little thought and attention there is a better way . I’m not pretending to have the solution, but there’s got to be one….. hasn’t there ???

it is my duty, and I will do it with honour…

5 Apr

You may remember me mocking the  airline security issue a couple of days back…with the self reporting  ‘tick-a-box’ approach to ‘I’m a terrorist’ ….or  ‘I’m not a terrorist’.

Well our airport experience actually proved two things about the move to online, self serve check-in, and security screening.

1/ people lie (now that’s a surprise)

2/ the security guys are annoyingly slow …. but good at their job.

We arrived with a comfortable buffer of time before our flight and a plan to fill that time relaxing with a coffee, however, that was clearly not going to happen. As we decanted our metal bits, liquids and laptop  into the plastic trays,  and threw our carry on onto the conveyer belt, the security guy is like a broken record repeating his mantra about removing all aerosol cans for inspection. Yeah yeah we get it ….

‘Mr 50Something’ got pulled aside for an extra swipe of the metal detector after setting off the walk through screening with his brand new titanium knees (a brief explanation and he was free to go)… then as I walk through I notice the conveyor belt has stopped and MY suitcase hauled aside for a closer inspection.  Everything was being done systematically and in frustratingly a thorough manner…so I’m left standing while they complete the inspection of the previous luggage (by now I’m thinking  ‘bugga I’m thinking there goes my coffee’).screening

Feeling very smug about the contents of my bag, and knowing they would find no contraband  I was  amused by the fuss (at first)… but then started to get a little irritated as the clocked ticked and I could see we were no longer early.

The search of the other passenger’s bag was taking forever. He was very defensive and ‘daring’ the inspector to find anything illegal, as the contents of his backpack were systematically spread across the counter, however, the inspector calmly and forcefully insisted that there was a knife secreted in there somewhere.

THEN  on the third run through the contents…there is was…a knife alright! With a 25cm long blade, tucked away inside a cardboard sleeve and wrapped in a t shirt.  The passenger just shrugged and said ‘OK you win’…as if to say it was worth a try.

So by now our boarding call is happening,  and I’m very politely suggesting that they just ‘have a quick look and let me go because there is nothing irregular in my bag’… the response (read with Indian accent) was ‘Madam it is my duty, and I will do it with honour , I will be as fast as I am able but I must be thorough’. To which I’m thinking yes that’s great but I’m going to miss my plane. Then he pulls out a can of hairspray ….an AEROSOL can..oops ….now look who’s  embarrassed!

Oh dear, that’s what happens when you pack in an absent minded rush.  I completely forgot about the hairspray (that I probably won’t even use)

I wonder if that was the same excuse the ‘knife man’ used ??  Somehow I think his packing was a little more deliberate.

Yes we made the plane …JUST !!!

lets do the time warp…again

tie dye 2

So I found myself taking another trip back in time this evening. …Funny , just one week after the ‘Chinese Restaurant time warp last week, tonight I was back to the 70’s again surrounded  by tie-dyed t shirts, carved candles, plastic lightshades and macramé.tie dye

As we wandered through the markets, there was one stall after another full of goodies that were ‘oh-so reminiscent’ of puberty blues.

Proving that everything old is new again (and that us baby boomers had great taste)
