life according to Miss Piggy ….

15 Jul

Today I’m torn, and not sure what to wonder about…the possibilities are endless after a rather bizarre day at work.office

So rather than pondering the nuances of human behaviour… you know, the good the bad and the ugly of office life…I think I’ll try a  Bex, a cuppa tea and a good lie down instead.

BUT … before take to my bed,  I am happy to report the outcome of our tightly controlled scientific observation of lunar patterns (see full moon madness & still mooning, a few days back)

I can finally confirm that YES, we have the same moon behaviour here in Aus as our friends on the other side of the globe… so if moon is full, so too is theirs. Phew… that took a few days to sort, but my foreign correspondent reported back today, with a full moon sighing over Barcelona 2 nights ago.

That’s one big issue sorted.

driving blind…

10 Jul

How is it that you can drive the same route every day… yet not actually see what’s going on?

As any regular followers will know, I often comment on the quirky, nonsensical and useless things that catch my attention while driving to or from work… You know, the ‘odd’ numberplate, bad spelling on a street or shop sign, crazy pedestrian behaviour…. anything really.

So you can imagine my own surprise when today I noticed a brand new house en route …  I have never seen it before, yet it’s clearly been under house buildingconstruction for many weeks if not months.

How does that happen?

Now I’m not talking about a new project home in a housing estate …. I’m talking about semi-rural living where generously proportioned homes take prime position on small or medium sized acreage. I know I’m driving to the conditions and attentive on the road; but it seems that somehow the busy and often odd thoughts going on in my brain must block out the more ‘routine’  sights along the way.

I can tell you about the cat laying in the window of a house I passed …. yet I can’t see a house …go figure!

a hallmark moment …

2 Jul

I never cease to be amazed by the random interactions that occur when you least expect them (I guess that’s why they’re ‘random’)….

Anyway, today I was minding my own business, browsing in a department store, and all of a sudden this woman appeared at my side….and launched into …

“excuse me, my son turns 18 tomorrow…. what card should I buy for him”? …… as she presented me with three to choose from.

18.21818.3
I was completely stunned, and immediately wondered ‘what the hell’??? before helping her rule out two of the three cards in her hand, by asking ...

(Q)’is he a funny guy’?…(A) NO

(Q) is he a very conservative young man’?…(A) NO

BINGO!!! we were left with a fairly safe but contemporary looking hallmark creation which was sure not to offend …. that was…until she opened it to discover the inside leaf had been inserted upside down. While this appealed to my sense of humour….and really fitted with the bizarreness of this encounter … she was not impressed, so off she headed back to the ‘card section’ leaving me wondering what on earth just happened.

I went back to my business, but 10 minutes later she came running to me at the cash register, just to prove that she found the ‘right’ card…with the insert in correct position…PHEW it was great to know that all was good in the world again (lets just hope that ‘Mr 18year old’ appreciates his Mum’s efforts tomorrow).

one for the sisterhood…

24 Jun

Rushing around before work this morning and I was left  with no time to ‘put my face on’ before I raced out the door !

aaagh panic… naked face…work day…. NOOOO!!!!makeup

I managed to slap some mosturiser on, and figured I would do the rest  at the traffic lights en route…then add  finishing touches as soon as I arrived at the office. But when I was fifteen minutes down the road I began to sweat with panic … I was suddenly convinced I’d left all of my make-up at home.

There I was naked lashes, no eyebrows, pale lips and shiny moisturised ’50Something’ skin.

makeup2I was torn whether I should go back home (and then be extra late for work) ….. or dive into a store along the way to grab some basics….I’m glad to report that common sense prevailed and I pulled over to REALLY look in my bag, and there it was, my makeup purse with all the requisite supplies. phew!

I remember the days when my skin was youthful enough to be seen naked in public, and I even had enough colour in my lips to just add gloss…. but I’m embarrassed to say I have not left the house without mascara since I was 13!!! …yeah yeah …but I’m a redhead OK?

Anyway… all was well in my world once I had those basics sorted.

~I’m 50 something ….but I’m not dead yet~

say what ???

23 Jun

Ok so tonight  I’m banging on again about our language, and the crazy stupid things we say without even thinking twice about the paradox….no wonder we’re all confused.oxymoron

Today I was more than a little amused when I actually tuned into the stream of contradictions. …all day long I’ve been surrounded by oxymorons (and I’m not even talking about Tony Abbott).

The day started with a TV report on the ‘small crowd’ that turned out (to see someone-or-other…who cares?)…and then the breakfast crew were laughing at their own ‘seriously funny’ jokes… When I got to the office the talk was all about ‘health promotion-prevention’ and ‘ill health’ (someone please remind me how THAT can be…. and I work there!!).

As the evening settled in, we talked about a ‘pretty ugly’ puppy that I saw… the fact that a friend was going on a ‘working holiday’ … then finally I heard an advert for a movie about the American ‘civil war’!

Perhaps it pays not to over-think it… for fear that nothing will make any sense.

feeling flushed…

19 Jun

I’ve mentioned in the past my delight at  noticing the curious words in my world… you know the ones that pop in your face as you go about your daily business…. street signs, advertising, graffiti, number plates…the funny flushthings, the incorrect spelling and the  cryptic messages.

But today I was struck by the number of signs in one toilet cubicle, reminding me how to complete my visit . Nothing clever or cryptic …. just completely bizarre.

This was no public facility, it was a staff loo in a not-to-busy office block… yet there were 3 large laminated messages staring me in the face reminding me to ‘check behind me’….’leave the toilet as I would like to find it’… and  to ‘flush’…I would have though it comes naturally for most people most of the time…. but clearly not !!!

I wonder why the sign poster would think that THREE signs will be more effective for the offender than just one??? or do three sign constitute yelling?  I was actually tempted me to walk out without pushing that magic little button at all just to show them a lesson.. because I just can’t stand nagging.

procrastinator

As I have admitted several times of the past 173 posts…I am a procrastinator! there you go, one more time for the record… I PROCRASTINATE !!!

I’m not proud of it… but hey, I’m not an axe murderer, it’s just that the more time there is to get things done the longer I leave them.  I’m not scared of hard work  or putting in the effort … I just tend to leave things until the death knell …repeatedly (but never seem to learn).

I know I’m not alone, and this behaviour will be familiar to many of you; but today I was thinking how completely opposite that is to my dear departed Mum. She was so organised and planned  that she would have birthday card and presents bought and wrapped about a month before they were needed…         (“you never know what might happen so you need to be prepared” ).… and she wasn’t even a Girl Guide !! Whereas me ?? well unless something shouts ‘BUY ME FOR… insert name here…’. then I’m very guilty of last minute shopping… BUT shopping is easily solved.

It’s things like doing the ironing as we’re getting dressed and running out the door …or finishing the painting before the guests arrive, that are slightly more problematic…. not to mention finishing this assignment.

YEP, the one that I’m writing now on another screen….(It’s not that I’m not enjoying the subject, I just keep procrastinating and finding distractions).

Today I took a couple of hours off work to get stuck into it. So far I’ve prepared dinner, cleaned the bathroom, checked the news, played my scrabble moves, posted on a forum, downloaded some photos and played with the dogs ….and NOW I’m writing to you!

But here’s the thing … I know all the tips, and would be a fabulous coach to anyone studying. I would be full of sage advice on planning and pacing oneself for the long haul … I think it’s a classic case of “physician heal thyself”…

At least my job here is done for the day ~ my daily ramble is written so it’s time to switch screens and actually get stuck into it…after all it was due a week ago! My very generous professor gave me an extension after my trip to hospital…along with the words “just get it to me when you can”…oh dear if only she knew!

3 strikes…

10 Jun

Funny how suddenly out of the blue you can have a bizarre and strange run of good luck…luck

This time last week I was feeling more than a little ‘blah’ then it all changed … I opened my on-line scrabble game and my tiles had been dealt spelling me a 7 letter word without any need for thinking… SCORE !!! 100points !

Next day I put on a jacket to find $20 in the pocket…obviously tucked away safely since last winter…SCORE!!! $20 !

Finally, last night cleaning the accumulated road-rip rubbish from the floor of the car after our weekend away,  I reach under the seat to discover my work I.D badge that’s been lost for months …SCORE !!! (priceless given the hospital security that’s encoded…and my devastation at the thought of needing to report it lost…oops).

I wonder if I should buy a lottery ticket ?

caught like a rabbit in the headlights…

6 Jun

Travelling home from work on these short winter days, means that it is usually pitch black before I get to the sanctuary and warmth of my fireplace… BUT the blackness doesn’t stop the die hard joggers and walkers.

I was startled the first time I came across one, but have now come to expect those small bright lights bobbing up and down, and popping out from behind the bushes on the quiet country laneways.headlight3

I wonder if these die hard runners by night, masquerade as ‘miners’ or even more interesting, gynaecologists by day? mmm?headlight 4

These miners ‘headlamps’ light up the the way with enough luminosity to blind the oncoming traffic….perfect for the jogger …but not so fabulous for the one being jogged at.

So if you happen to be one of these culprits, perhaps it’s worth checking to see if you have a dimmer switch before you blind a driver and end up on the tar next to the flat rabbit.
