crying tears of blood…

10 Oct

It’s been one of those weeks….not actually badjust really really busy and finely tuned with no room for error. I know I am the one steering the ship…. and I am the one who can control my own ‘busy-ness’ level (to an extent) … yadayadaya… BUT the truth is I (mostly) thrive on a fairly high energy existence.

It’s just that this particular week has seen a bunch of deadlines and social commitments all collide in the space of a few days… so I had been just managing to keep all the balls in the air and things ticking along… that was,  UNTIL this afternoon.

After working on an 18page report for the past few days, I was all set to attach lost documentand send it (only a few hours PAST it’s deadline) …. and I LOST it ! I mean gone …vanished… evaporated somewhere into cyberspace.

With no-one to blame but myself,  I pulled in every favour I could, as well as contacting our I.T geeks and after about an hour of intense searching …it was concluded that I needed to start again… from scratch !!

The thing is, I KNOW what I did, and it was just a dumb rookie mistake ….so I  just had to suck it up and beg forgiveness…then move on.

No time for tears of blood in this busy life … I have visitors to entertain, a ball to attend, 2 essays to write, an exam to prepare for ….and world peace to solve in 3000 words …before Monday.

So I best get cracking ..I’m 50Something…but not dead yet.

all in a days work …

9 Oct

I feel like the last few posts have been all about ME…and to avoid becoming self indulgent I sense the need to get back to tackling the big issues.

So tonight I’m wondering about our men (and women) in blue…Our enforcers of law and order…our keepers of the peace …our very own NSW Police Force.  Now I am not about to criticise, they have a tough and at times dangerous job to do ….BUT you wouldn’t have known that today. pedestrian

On my drive through Sydney  I noticed ‘gangs’ off 2 or 3 Officers strategically located on busy city street corners….watching then pouncing on unsuspecting pedestrians who stray from the allocated road crossing, then writing tickets for their ‘criminal’ behaviour. I know its about safety, and that rules are in place to help us all … but seriously ??? who was left on ‘bank robber alert’, or ready to respond to an emergency??

Having pondered the value of this pedestrian blitz…I then left the city, smack bang in the middle of the peak hour traffic. Driving at a snail’s pace in bumper to bumper traffic on the freeway, I passed a number of Police Officers with their radar set up …..

police radarNow you tell me …. does that seem like a reasonable use of taxpayers money, when, for 20km of my trip I did not exceed 50kph in a 110kph stretch of road?  It was impossible to come even close to the speed limit ~ let alone go over it in that short space…..YET I passed 4 patrol cars parked obscurely so as to avoid detection, each one clearly on a mission to catch speedsters ….. BUT WHY during peak hour traffic? it makes no sense at all.

Having given this dilemma some thought …it makes me wonder what they actually hope to achieve…. I mean here we had 4 Officers sitting on the side of the freeway in the vain HOPE that someone might exceed the speed limit …. or perhaps they just wanted some peace and quiet and a bit of  ‘time out’.

I wonder …..

it’s all in the foundation work

8 Oct

Some of you will recall my recent ramblings about trying to buy a ball gown … and finally nabbing a bargain (despite the cow in one of the  stores)… anyway the much anticipated  event is happening on Saturday.

pantyline

I’m happy with my dress and have all my accessories sorted … now all that is left is to figure what goes below the surface. It’s a tricky business to get the right amount of support without creating unnecessary ooze lines… so it’s a work in progress, but I’m on the winning side …just going to need a fair bit of magic tape to hold everything in place while we ‘trip the light fantastic’  ….

Or then, there is always this pretend G Strip option (pictured)…but why bother?? LOL

time to come out of the closet…

7 Oct

The warm weather has arrived and with it a need to switch into a summer wardrobe …which means it’s time to kick off the boots and slip on the strappy sandals.

But here’s the thing… I have a confession to make.. it’s time to fess up, you see I have really embarrassing ankles.

They are not the regular cankle variety where the shape is continuous from calf to foot, but
canklesmore of the   “OMG you have hernias on your feet” kind of look, and the strappy sandal becomes quite an issue if not chosen wisely.

Winter is a blessing because boots hide a multitude of sins… but bring on the summer footwear and suddenly I become acutely aware of my muffin tops.

I’ve spoken to a few ‘professionals’ who have drawn blanks, in fact one Physio giggled and said he had ‘not ever seen anything quite like it’ …. mmm helpful (not).

Now, while I know there are much bigger issues …. like solving poverty and achieving world peace…  I wonder what the chances are of having a spot of liposuction (if in fact it is a fatty deposit …not a weirdly ruptured muscle … but who’d know??)… OR perhaps I’m a candidate for “Embarrassing Bodies”

Anyway I feel much better having gone public and would love to know if others share this bizarre affliction and what you do to disguise it.

I may be 50Something but we all deserve to be proud of our  ankles….. don’t we ??CAM00242

directionally challenged…

6 Oct

It’s funny how there seem to be a few recurrent themes that have popped up along the way in my year long blog challenge… and one of them is “signs”  cryptic, mis-spelled or just plain stupid, they seem to catch my attention.

Today though I was struck by their absence. Just when I really wanted one there were none to be seen.

We were off on a boating adventure about 30km or so upstream heading to a cafe for lunch. With no waterways map, just a printout of google earth to show us our progress, it was hard to know exactly how far we had travelled …or where on earth we were…(UNTIL I realised that we could use the GPS on our mobile phone ..but that’s another story).

It made me wonder why there are no ‘location’ markers anywhere en’route … you know like a suburb name or point of interest that would make it easier to get some bearings from the water….I mean, it’s not rocket science is it?

While I’m having a bit of a ‘sign whine’ …I can tell you that I had 2  encounters this week that would both fit the stupid category.

On Tuesday at the hospital I saw a regulation red STOP sign plastered on the side wall of a building. No walkway, no doorway just a blank wall that said STOP !!! – go figure (perhaps it’s a way of preventing hospital over-crowding).

The following day I was walking across a pedestrian crossing and noticed a yellow barricade… (the kind use at road-works sites) that had been placed square across the zebra stripes ..and the sign ~facing me said “beware of pedestrians”….mmm now we couldn’t have THEM on a crossing now could we ?

Finally I was reminded of one sign that has received a fair bit of exposure ..but still makes me smile

rabbits, dogs, tears and testosterone

5 Oct

Now I’m not an especially huge fan of Rugby League football (or any other footy for that matter)… but tonight’s grand final was enough to keep me engaged as the Bulldogs chased the Rabbits all over the paddock.rabbit and dog

The overt displays of man-love at the end of the game were worth waiting for. After 80mins of watching these testosterone fuelled young men battle for their life like gladiators … they then wept with joy at the blow of the whistle.

But man-love can’t be soft, it’s gotta be rugged and ‘manly’…so we saw bodies dripping ‘blood sweat and tears’ embrace…cry…embrace some more …. then break the hold with a punch. You know, that awkward thing men do when they realise that they accidentally got a bit soft and actually showed some emotion.

It was a sentimental win and I’m sure there were plenty of tears from the men in the stadium as well…. well done Bunnies.

smarter than the average 5oSomething…

4 Oct

It’s that time of year again here in parts of Australia, when we welcome back our longer days, our evening BBQs… and the kids that grumble about going to bed while it’s still daylight (well maybe we don’t actually welcome the whingey little people bit ….but they soon acclimatise and enjoy it too).

Yep, I’m talking about daylight saving….and I love it !!

Daylight-Savings-TimeI could go on and on about why I love it … but my point is really about the confusion of changing the clock, and how it plays games with even the sharpest mind.

There is always the inevitable debate ‘do I put it forward and hour?? ….or back by an hour? ‘….. ‘am I gaining an hour of beauty sleep ? …or being ripped off by an hour?’ Not to mention …‘if I have an airline ticket, purchased BEFORE the time change …what time do I go to the airport?’

So to wake in the morning and find the bedside clock-radio, microwave and kitchen clock telling me one time, while my ‘smart phone’ had already moved on and is telling me something different, really does my head in.

I mean, HOW does the phone know?

Seriously…… I know it’s all about satellites and co-ordinates and all that scientific stuff, but honestly it does my head in to think that every phone & computer just automatically knows what to do based on it’s address at the time.

What happens if you live on the Queensland~NSW border, where one street can make a difference to what time of day it is?….So, OK smart phone… are you smart enough to cope with THAT. ? ..and what happens when you pop to the local shop that just happens to be inter-state???

Some things are just too hard for my ‘50Something’ brain to understand… perhaps I just need to accept that it’s one of life’s many mysteries, and stop trying.

word scramble …

3 Oct

Feeling a little poorly this evening and struggling to pull my words together…

feeling poorly

…maybe it’s the thermometer  !!

back on the boobs ….

2 Oct

Staying on theme ….today I went bra-shopping.

Honestly, I would normally rather have my top lip waxed than go through the torture of finding a well fitting bra…. BUT that said it was a lot better today than the time I tore my calf muscle while being fitted. (Yep bra…true story you can read all about that exciting event right here … it makes me laugh every time I think back…despite the agony at the time). …

But back to today… it was great to see that the racks are now chockablock full of gelato colours and gorgeous styles to suit all shapes and sizes. There were minimisers, maximisers, push-up, half cups, underwire,no wire, chicken fillets, soft cups, t shirt bras .. bla bla bla ….  it’s endless and mindboggling. They all fit differently  ….and given that you can only take 3 at a time into the fitting room… it’s a slow and tedious exercise. BUT I eventually won !!

My next challenge is figuring how to keep the new strapless dress up, and in place …. but that’s a story for another day.

I’m 50Something …but not dead yet !

defying gravity ….

1 Oct

A couple of weeks back I announced the war against backfat and I’m happy to report I’m winning!!! It’s shrinking in bucket-loads and there only a small amount of residual bra-strap ooze to be dealt with. sagging-breasts

But it’s got me wondering about all the other drooping bits and how we 50something’s can defy gravity and restore them to their correct location…

Is it wrong to want  the perk back on my pectorals and  and the bounce back in my butt? Sadly both seem to be heading south at a great rate, never to return ……Unless perhaps I start a trend and take to permanent inversion…. …Imagine that. And it opens up a whole new market for the latest fashion accessory…. ‘hand-shoes…  the must have item for women defying gravity’.

So whose with me ?
